Persuasion in the Letter of Jude

This article focuses on the persuasive function of language in the letter of Jude. The literary and rhetorical approaches provide the methodological paradigm that furnishes a basic framework of presuppositions within which this short New Testament docu ment is approached. After a brief discussion of the context-determined functions of persuasive discourse in general, Jude's socio-cultural context is constructed. Within this framework the rhetorical situation of the letter is then investigated. The different interactional levels in the letter, as well as the different textual strategies employed on these levels to attain the author's overall goal, namely to 'redefine' his readers' perceptions of reality, receive particular attention.
